ZEN ROBBI – Scotty Wittenberg – Bio. PDF Print E-mail

It’s not that often that you meet a guy as nice and down to earth as Zen Robbi drummer, Scott  “Ghostrider” Wittenberg. This rhythmic virtuoso was born in beautiful Santa Monica, California and shortly after moved up north to the comfy confines of San Francisco’s East Bay where he spent the majority of his childhood.

It was here in Danville, CA that Scotty’s musical aspirations were born. With his family’s encouragement, Scott started out learning how to play and interpret music at a young age.  At first, learning the basics on a wide range of instruments (piano, guitar, horns), until finally opting for drums and percussion as his musical weapon of choice.

Studying drums and taking notes from such greats as John Bonhan (Led Zeppelin), Buddy Rich (Greatest Jazz drummer that’s walked this earth) and even Ringo Starr (Beatles) is where Scott Wittenberg has gained a lot of his drive and focus to stay as progressive as possible as a modern day drummer. He has taken the lead from these masters of old and intertwined his own unique style and obvious years of dedication to his craft to come up with undeniably original beats and rhythms all while staying true to his own laid back style of play, with poise and tenacity.

Scotty has been playing in a band since before his days at San Ramone Valley High, through his studies at LA’s famed Musician’s Institute and eventually up to where he is today, instructing contemporary drumming classes and holding rhythm section workshops at that very same school from where he recently graduated. He has played in over a hundred different bands and projects throughout his musical career, and has played drums and percussion on over ten studio-recorded albums.

A strange twist of fate, the power of great friends and the goal to make the most enjoyable music in the world is what led Scotty to meeting up with front-man Mic Dangerously, bassist Timmy “Too Tall” and the funky upbeat jazz sounds of Zen Robbi. Since joining the band in early 2007, Scotty has played the drums and sang backup vocals on Zen Robbi’s second studio album, “Pawn Gone King”(2007) and this year’s soon to be released album, “Heavy Lies the Crown”, as well as playing well over a hundred live shows together over the past few years.

As far as Scotty’s outlook on the months and years to come for Zen Robbi, he is very optimistic, excited and open to all the opportunities and experiences that lie in store for this incredible band. All he has to do is simply quote the legendary Beatle’s singer John Lennon when he says, “To the top boys!”

And that’s where I’ll leave it. Keep your eyes wide open to witness this young man’s unbelievably technical playing style with Zen Robbi and a keen ear peeled to hear progressive drumming at its best and a true musical legend in the making. Scotty “Ghostrider” Wittenberg’s drumming is something like hearing the musical god’s playing thunder to the tune of The Venture’s, “Wipeout”, only on steroids. …To the Top!
